The Insight’s hybrid systemis comprised of an AC Synchronous Permanent-Magnet Electric Motor powered by a lithium ion battery along with gas-powered 1.5L inline 4-cylinder engine. The Insight typically utilizes the motor for power, and the gasoline engine doubles as a generator to recharge the battery. Considered on its own, the engine produces 107 horsepower while the electric motor produces 129 horsepower. Altogether, the Insight has a total system horsepower of 151. It will accelerate quickly and athletically to help with trickier driving situationssuch as merging or passing.
Hybrid vehicles achieve incredible fuel economy and the Insight is no different. It’s not just a better option for the environment, it also saves time and money with less visits to the gas station and longer stretches on the road. Instead of a traditional transmission, the engine and motor system works with an electric continuously variable transmission, or e-CVT, and delivers power to the front wheels. For the entry-level LX and mid-level EX trim, the EPA estimated fuel economy is 55 city / 49 highway / 52 combined mpg.* If you choose the top-of-the-line Touring model, you’ll get 51 city / 45 highway / 48 combined mpg.*
For an engaging driving experience, the Insight features a three-mode driving system. The Econ mode offers drivers the most comfortable and efficient ride. It’s a great mode to use for everyday driving or to keep the cabin insulated from engine and road noise. The Sport mode transforms the Insight into a sport-tuned vehicle, perfect for drivers who love to drive. It creates a different feel at the pedals and accentuates the guttural growls of the engine when you accelerate. Finally, the EV mode allows the Insight to operate solely on electric power.
The Insight features an extensive list of active safety features that enhance its reliability through all road and weather conditions. These features ensure the Insight always performs at its best.
Drivers who explore the Insight further will note more performance features throughout the three trim levels. Hill Start Assist, for instance, ensures the Insight starts from a stationary position, even on an incline. And the Eco Assist System helps drivers adjust their inputs to drive more efficiently and get the most out of their hybrid.
